Dawn Nakagawa visits Value Schools as a Visiting Professional

Dawn Nakagawa, presenting as a Visiting Professional at University Prep Value

Value Schools recently established the Visiting Professionals Program. Accomplished leaders from a myriad of career fields and backgrounds are invited to speak to our students about their work and life experiences.  Scientists, lawyers, non-profit leaders, artists and others have already visited our campuses, sharing experience and giving advice.

Dawn Nakagawa, Value Schools Foundation Board Member and Executive Vice President of the Pacific Council on International Policy at the Berggruen Institute, recently visited University Prep.  She shared how the passion she holds for what she does has influenced her educational and career path.

“I love what I do,” said Ms. Nakagawa. “And the reason why I love it is because I feel it’s important for the world. And I think that is the key. In life, figure out what your passion is. Your passion will become your purpose."

Ms. Nakagawa helped students see that educational and career choices are not made in a moment – they are developed over a lifetime of dedication, recalibration, and passion.

Don't do it just for the money, and you'll have a much more fulfilling life. And you are off to a great start, because you are getting a great education. And it is a values-based education, and it's teaching you what kind of person you want to be in the world."

“It was actually nice to hear how she didn’t like her first jobs,” said ninth grade student Siria C. “Because she ended up really feeling she was giving back as she changed careers. It makes me feel less like I have to get it all perfect the first time.”

Value Schools aims to enrich students' educational experience, strengthen ties with our local communities, and most importantly ensure that students are motivated, successful, and valuable members of society after graduation.  Ms. Nakagawa’s life story helped students feel excited about their future.

“Money is something that happens when you are on your way to your destination,” said Ms. Nakagawa. “So don't do it just for the money, and you'll have a much more fulfilling life. And you are off to a great start, because you are getting a great education. And it is a values-based education, and it's teaching you what kind of person you want to be in the world. That is a huge head-start over other kids in the world."

We know the opportunity to witness firsthand testimony about real careers from actual, relatable professionals helps our students focus their lives as they prepare for adulthood.  Find out how you, or someone you know, can become a Visiting Professional!
